Panel to discuss Sioux nickname
DECEMBER 5, 2000

Richard Monette, tribal chairman of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Tribe of North Dakota, is among one of the participants scheduled to discuss the "Fighting Sioux" nickname of the University of North Dakota at a panel tonight.

Tribes in the state have passed resolutions in support of changing the name. Most Native American students and many faculty at the school also favor changing it.

But most other students and alumni say they want to keep it. A decision on the issue could come this month.
