Idaho might ban 'squaw' names

JANUARY 25, 2001 Norma Peone, Vice Chairman of the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Council, on Wednesday said she hopes a new bill drafted by six tribes will ban the use of "squaw" in public place names in Idaho. The bill would rename in total 98 place names in the state. Sen. Ralph "Moon" Wheeler will sponsor the bill, said Coeur d'Alene press secretary Bob Bostwick. If passed, Idaho would join Maine and other states in changing "squaw" names. Get the Story:
