The Cherokee Nation on Monday filed a brief in support of a lawsuit challenging the legality of a proposal to make English the official language of Oklahoma.

Voters weren't able to decide on the issue this past November because the proponents of the initiative missed a deadline for having it appear on the ballot. But it is still being considered and the tribe says it would violate the Native American Languages Act.

The lawsuit has been filed in the Oklahoma Supreme Court
