English-only movement starts again

JANUARY 31, 2001 The organizer of an English-only movement in Oklahoma said she will start up the drive again but state Senator Carol Martin didn't specify when she would begin circulating another petition. Tribes in the state last year mobilized to oppose the initiative. Its supporters, however, weren't able to get the question onto a statewide ballot in time for the November election. The petition is currently before the state Supreme Court but Martin wants to start the process all over again, hoping to take advantage of success in Arizona and Utah, where voters approved similar measures. The Arizona proposition, affecting bilingual education, might not have much of an effect, however, and the Utah one, affecting government business, is also being challenged. Get the Story:
