MARCH 15, 2001

The Department of Education is investigating a human rights complaint it received about the University of North Dakota, the school which has come under fire for its "Fighting Sioux" mascot.

The Office for Civil Rights can't comment on the exact nature of the complaint but did confirm to the Grand Forks Herald of the investigation. The office is also evaluating a second complaint.

The school could lose federal funding if found not to comply with the Civil Rights Act.
