Oldest 'sweat lodge' discovered in Belize

MARCH 20, 2001 Archaeologists from Boston University have discovered what may be the oldest sweat lodge in the Americas at a Mayan city in Belize. Called pib na, researchers refer to the structure as a sweat house. The sweat house was used as a place of therapy and ritual and is similar to sweat lodges and sweat baths of tribes in North America. The sweat house discovered is estimated to be 3,000 years old. It is located in northeastern Belize, near the Mexican border. Get the Story:
