Tribal oral histories of earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest are finally being recognized after years of being discarded as myths.

Since the 1990s, University of Washington seismologist Ruth Ludwin has been researching the oral histories of tribes like the Hoh and Quilleute. She believes a commonly told and widespread story of a battle between the Thunderbird and the Whale represents a 1700 earthquake.
