Students at the St. Labre Elementary School on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana are headed to the international Destination ImagiNation competition in Knoxville, Tennessee, next month.

This is the first time St. Labre will be competing. The competition promotes problem solving among students.

As part of the process, the seven third- and fourth-graders are required to come up with a performance using various technical special effects. The children chose the Northern Cheyenne's 1879 escape from Fort Robinson, in which members of the tribe were massacred by the Army after they tried to return to their ancestral home in Montana.

The government had attempted to remove them to Oklahoma, where some Cheyenne still remain.

The children are raising money for their trip. To help them each raise the $1,000 for transportation and hotel costs, call St. Labre at (406) 784-4500.
