MAY 15, 2000

According to University of Alaska Fairbanks linguistics professor, Michael Krauss, only five of the 20 Alaska Native languages will still be spoken in 2055.

Alaska Senator Georgianna Lincoln believes a new law requiring school districts which have more than a 50 percent Native student population to establish advisory boards on Native languages would help get more languages taught in schools.

The advisory boards could recommend language curriculum but it would be a district's decision whether or not to implement it.
