MAY 18, 2000

Keeping kids in school is but one of the challenges faced by the Omaha Nation school in Macy, Nebraska. Superintendent Todd Chessmore eliminated the Christmas and Spring Break vacations in hopes of curbing warm weather truancy but the initiative had little effect.

The school also battles lower achievement scores and higher dropout rates than most others.

Along with the school district of the Winnebago Tribe, the Omaha Nation schools are planning a lawsuit against the state of Nebraska for lost funding to their schools.
