Indian schools near lawsuit

The Winnebago and Omaha Nation public schools are preparing a lawsuit challenging the state of Nebraska over aid to schools on the northeastern Nebraska reservations. Officials of both schools districts took to the legislature on Monday to make their case.

The bill that Governor Mike Johanns vetoed would have provided the school districts with additional funding. Since the schools are located on trust land, they have no ability to generate funding through taxes like other public schools so they must rely on state and federal aid.
