SIPI praised for retaining students

JUNE 18, 2001 Retention rates at the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque are better than those at four-year colleges, say education officials at the New Mexico tribal college. President Carolyn Elgin says the school keeps 85 percent of its students from one trimester to the next. In comparison, as many as 50 percent of Indian students drop out, one tribal study found.
