Schools don't attend mascot meeting

WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 2001 Two South Dakota school districts who were the target of a meeting held on Tuesday night failed to attend the Indian mascot presentation. But while Sioux Falls and Wakonda officials skipped out on the meeting, the few who did attend watched as it turned into a debate between activist Betty Ann Gross of the Minority Resource Center and Qadir Aware, director of the Sioux Falls Multi-Cultural Center, who disputed the notion that mascots aren't respectful to Indian people.
