Enrollment of American Indians at colleges and universities in Montana has improved since the Legislature in 1991 passed a law to increase minority enrollment at schools in the state.

Overall, Indians make up 8 percent of the student body in the state. In comparison, Native Americans make up 6 percent of the state population.

Tribal colleges are seeing the largest increases in enrollment. For many students, they are a more welcoming environment than larger institutions.

Despite the successes, however small, Indian students say improvements need to be made. There are negative perceptions among the student body, they say, and it is sometimes assumed Native students don't need help.
