TUESDAY, JULY 31, 2001

Alaska Indian Arts of Alaska, is working on a project to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington.

The project mixes traditional Native art and culture with the new. Five carvers in Alaska have been working on a 20-foot red cedar totem pole since January.

Yesterday, the pole made part of its journey from Alaska to Washington, where it will receive finishing touches. Glass elements will be carved and neon will be added to the pole, which tells the story of how the school was founded.
