English-only still raises questions

SEPTEMBER 14, 2000

Although a proposal to make English the official language of Oklahoma won't appear on the November ballot, it is still raising questions and controversy among state residents.

A businessman reminded others that Oklahoma is indeed a Choctaw word and wondered if the name would have to be changed if the proposal, which would require all documents and state business to be in English, ever passed.

The businessman and others, however, have registered their challenges with the state's Election Board. Tribes in the state have also voiced opposition to the question, which could appear on next year's ballot.
