Research being published this week suggests whales are more closely related to land-dwelling animals such as cows and hippopotamuses than to extinct carnivores.

Researchers from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Ohio have found fossils in Pakistan that link the whales to the even-toed land animal. The research appears in today's issue of Nature.

A similar study published in tomorrow's issue of Science also found in Pakistan shows a link as well. The ears, legs and ankle structure tie whales to cows, say the studies.
