"The so-called conspiracy of 1669 is one of the more obscure chapters in the history of our early settlements in eastern Connecticut. Little has been written about it, but bits and pieces of the story are scattered through Colonists' correspondence as well as brief entries in town records.

Disquieting rumors of a supposed Indian uprising led by Ninigret, sachem of the Rhode Island Nehantics, worried the settlers in eastern Connecticut. Friends in Rhode Island and others from Montauk on Long Island warned them there was trouble in the air and that they must take steps to protect themselves. . ."
