WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2002 The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee held a hearing on Tuesday to consider the nomination of a conservative African-American lawyer for a civil rights post. Gerald A. Reynolds would head the Office of Civil Rights within the Department of Education. He would oversee civil rights laws affecting education, including affirmative action and complaints from Native Americans about the use of mascots. With regard to affirmative action, he said his views have been misrepresented. He has been called in the press an opponent but he told the panel yesterday he was for "affirmative access."
