Student riots lead to canceled classes

FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2002 Classes have been canceled today at Española Valley High school due to riots that broke about among students on Thursday. Security guards at the school suggested the fights may have started by rival gangs. According to a student quoted by The Santa Fe New Mexican, fighting was widespread and uncontrollable. The state police said 15 to 20 officers from three different jurisdictions had to be called in to quell the riots. Pepper spray was used on the students and staff. The school has long been plagued with gang problems and crime. The school services students from nearby San Juan Pueblo and some area reservations. Get the Story:
