THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2002 Archaeologists have uncovered a 1,900-year-old Mayan mural in the jungles of Guatemala and say it provides rare insights into tribal culture. So far, only a six-foot-long and two-foot-high section of the mural has been uncovered. But what is seen so far is described as an exquisite masterpiece. The site is in northeastern Guatemala. Looters have apparently hit the site but left the mural untouched. National Geographic paid for the excursion, led by a researcher from the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. The find will be reported next month in the magazine.
