Exact Sand Creek site in dispute

THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2002

The National Park Service and tribal elders have differed on the exact location of the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre in Colorado.

The difference is only seven-tenths of a mile, though. Cheyenne and Arapaho tradition places the site south of the location archaeologists believe marks one of the worst massacres in history.

When the Sand Creek memorial is completed, both locations will be presented. Part of the land base is currently for sale because a private rancher wants more money than the government will pay.
