MONDAY, MARCH 4, 2002 Maria Pearson has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on repatriation issues in Iowa. Pearson, whose Sioux name is Hai Mechea Eunka (Running Moccasins), pushed the state more than 30 years ago to pass laws regarding the reburial of Native remains. After a six-year battle, the first repatriation law was passed in the country. Letters of support for Pearson can be sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Drammensveien 19, NO-0225 Oslo, Norway.
