Research published in today's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences cites evidence of domestic violence among Neanderthals.

The conclusion is based on one skull European researchers said shows a deliberately inflicted wound on a 36,000-year-old young male. "Aggression just forms part of human behavior," Christoph P.E. Zollikofer of the University of Zurich was quoted by The Washington Post as saying.

The male didn't die from the gash, which was said to have been inflicted by some sort of machete or sword. Friends and/or family helped him recover, the researchers said.
