The Naparyarmiut School in Hooper Bay, Alaska, is eyeing a Yup'ik language immersion program for kindergarten students this fall.

The program would be in addition to cultural traditions the school has incorporated into its curriculum. Principal Robert S. Gutierrez promised to include more Yup'ik teachings when he took the job.

Gutierrez says the programs help improve communication between non-Native teachers and the community.
