OCTOBER 12, 2000

The Washington state Department of Ecology is holding a public hearing on dioxins tonight in Seattle.

The state has drafted a proposal for the regulation of pollutants. Residents are invited to comment on it and can ask officials about the proposal and related issues.

Dioxins are long-lasting chemical pollutants which can lead to serious health problems such as chloracne and cancer. They are created by a number of human activities, such as burning household trash or municipal waste incineration.
