Tribe helps to save forest

OCTOBER 13, 2000 The Lummi Tribe is helping to save an old-growth forest in Washington and continues to raise funds to help complete purchase of land. The tribe runs the Arlecho Creek Forest Conservation Partnership. So far, they have been able to raise $5.25 million to buy the 3.5-square mile forest, whose asking price is $7.1 million. The partnership had been worrying about being able to raise enough money to meet a September 30 deadline. The group received $175,000 in the past two months and has to raise another $7.1 million to complete the sale within the next year or so. The area is used by the tribal youth who are sent there for ceremonial reasons. Get the Story:
