OCTOBER 2, 2000 An outbreak of sylvatic plague on the Fort Belknap reservation in Montana has hurt the reintroduction of black-footed ferrets at the site. The reservation is one of several locations where the US Fish and Wildlife Service has attempted to reintroduce the ferret, one of North America's rarest mammals. The animals were thought to be extinct but a population was discovered near a Wyoming ranch in 1981. The black-footed ferret is listed as endangered.
