Hoping to prevent even more homes from falling into the Chukchi Sea, the Alaska village of Shishmaref has been preparing for a disaster.

The village has spent $30,000 on sandbags and wire-mesh to protect against a potential storm. Kawerak Inc., a Native corporation, has been providing the funds.

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) has been seeking federal money for the effort.
