Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has written Secretary of Interior Gale Norton, urging her to consider opposition of tribes to a mine located near a sacred lake in New Mexico.

Zuni Pueblo is leading the fight against the mine proposed by the Salt River Project. The tribe, and others, fear the project will dry up the Zuni Salt Lake, 12 miles away from the mine.

Mark Pfeifle, press secretary for Norton, said the department wants to work with the tribes, the state of New Mexico and the Arizona company seeking federal and state approval for the project.
