Alaska man arrested for shooting pipeline

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2001 Authorities in Alaska on Thursday arrested a man in connection with the shooting of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, which has caused at least 70,000 gallons of crude oil to spill. The spill has basically shut down oil production on the North Slope and continued into the night. Six oil companies own the pipeline, which is difficult to protect because it traverses the Alaska wilderness. The spill is the biggest along the pipeline in 23 years. In 1978, someone set off plastic explosives, causing 16,000 barrels to spill. Get the Story:
