The state of New Mexico is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to delay issuing waste water permits on the Rio Grande because Sandia Pueblo is still reviewing its water standards.

The outcome of the Pueblo's review can affect the amount of contamination waste water treatment plants can release into the water. Pueblos along the river use it for ceremonial and religious purposes and often require a higher standard of water quality.

Representatives from the Pueblo and four others recently met on Thursday with officials from the greater Albuquerque area to discuss water officials affecting their respective communities. But at another meeting on Wednesday, the city of Bernalillo said complying with the Pueblo's standards would cost too much.
