DECEMBER 1, 2000

The Department of Energy on Thursday said removal of spent nuclear fuel at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington will begin next week.

The DOE considers the cleanup high priority due to its close proximity to the Columbia River. For now, the waste will be stored in canisters on the site until transfer to a national repository which has not yet been built.
