DOE launches nuclear probe

DECEMBER 12, 2000

Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson on Tuesday launched an internal investigation into allegations of bias over the proposed use of Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a nuclear waste site.

The investigation delays an expected report and recommendation on the site. A government document obtained by the Las Vegas Sun sugested that the Department of Energy was leaning towards recommending the site without a full scientific study.

On a related issue, eight companies are suing the Department over a contract it signed with another company. The companies pay money to a national waste fund while they say Peco Energy Co. essentially gets paid by the government for contributing less.
