The highly debated $334 million project Animas-La Plater water project may be passed today as part of a $450 billion spending bill.

The project was authorized in 1968. Over the years it has changed in scope and has now been incorporated into the settlement of the water rights of Colorado Ute tribes.

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo) is pushing the project. He emphasizes the fact that it settles the tribes' rights, but critics point out that he has rewritten the bill to require the tribes to spend more of their settlement money with non-Indian.
