Dam breaching not immediate goal

DECEMBER 20, 2000 A spokesman for the National Marine Fisheries Service said the breaching of four dams on the lower Snake River in Washington isn't in the immediate works. Tribal leaders and environmentalists have called on the government to breach the dams in order to help save the salmon in the Columbia River basin. But in response to the requests of more than 200 scientists, Brian Gorman said dam breaching isn't considered an immediate solution. The NMFS tomorrow will release the final plan detailing salmon recovery efforts. Get the Story:
