Although the state was passed over for the year 2002, southeastern Connecticut will host a children's environmental conference the following year.

The New England Coalition for Justice and Community Understanding, a group funded by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, campaigned along with a New York organization to have the United Nations host the conference in the state.
