A task force convened by Representative J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz) on Tuesday discussed how to use $6 million in federal funding the Deparment of Interior allocated this week to keep the San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP) from falling victim to the nation's growing energy crisis.

The SCIP is a power project operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It supplies power to some 13,300 customers in rural Pinal and Maricopa counties and to the Gila River Indian Community.

When its own supply cannot meet demand, SCIP buys power on the open market. But rising costs on the West Coast have forced SCIP to exhaust its own funds and would have meant passing on the increase to consumers.

Hayworth requested funds to address this issue and James McDivitt, acting Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs, helped push the measure through Capitol Hill.
