FEBRUARY 28, 2001

A number of environmental groups are seeking to intervene in a lawsuit filed by Alaska Governor Tony Knowles over the US Forest Service's controversial roadless forest initiative.

The plan was finalized by President Clinton last month, setting off a wave of criticism and lawsuits mostly by Republican lawmakers and Western Governors. Tribes have voiced opposition as well and the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho has joined a lawsuit in the state.

Conservation groups have also sought intervenor status in Idaho.
