MARCH 13, 2001

The Denver Post reports that the National Park Service today plans on endorsing a bill that allows for continued access by hunters to parts of the Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho.

The bill is one of several which would restore prior uses or rescind limits of uses of lands affected by the monument designations of President Bill Clinton. While she has ruled out rescinding the monument designations altogether, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton has indicated she will approve of changes to them if state and local communities agree.

The bill was introduced by Representative Michael Simpson (R-ID). The House Committee on Resources will hold a hearing on it today.
