State urged to protect salmon

MARCH 6, 2001 Several federal agencies last week wrote a letter to the Oregon Department of Forestry, urging them to adopt stronger salmon protections in order to conform with the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. The agencies said the state's rules on maintaining cold water in streams do not meet federal standards. Coho salmon and costal salmon are either dwindling or listed as threatened in Oregon.
