Salmon threatened by power crunch

MARCH 8, 2001 Steven Wright, acting chief of the Bonneville Power Administration, told the Northwest Power Planning Council on Wednesday that the federal government's salmon recovery efforts will be sacrificed to meet the region's power needs. Power is generated at federal dams by the flow of water. But water is being held back at certain times of the year in order to help salmon spawn. A drought is also affecting water supplies.
