The Sierra Club said comments from Wyoming were overwhelmingly in support of the US Forest Service's controversial roadless forest initiative.

The organization says 1,678 comments favored it while only 839 opposed it. John Spahr, chairman of the Wyoming Chapter of the Sierra Club, says the numbers are proof the public wants forest lands in the state protected from future road construction.

The Forest Service's plan, finalized in the last month of the Clinton administration, is being attacked by a number of states, Republican lawmakers, private industry, and at least one tribe. The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho has joined snowmobille groups and timber companies in attempting to overturn it.
