Group opposes Ute water funds

APRIL 16, 2001 An environmental group in New Mexico is opposing a provision in the Department of Interior's fiscal year 2002 budget that will provide $12 milllion to help satisfy the water rights of Ute Tribes in Colorado. Electors Concerned about Animas Water says the spending on the Animas-LaPlata dam project is unjustified. The project was approved last year by Congress to provide water to two Ute tribes and the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. Environmentalists have criticized it as requiring the Ute tribes to spend more money on non-Indian interests. Get the Story:
