APRIL 20, 2001

The Timbisha Shoshone Tribe of California on Wednesday said it has asked Secretary of Interior Gale Norton to engage in consultation over a proposed nuclear waste storage facility.

The proposed Yucca Mountain site is about 50 miles east of Death Valley, California, where the tribe is based. The Yucca Mountain site is being opposed by tribes and citizens in Nevada.

The tribe says it wants to be consulted on the project because its health and way of life would be affected.
