The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Thursday said the state's six Ojibwe bands speared 25 percent fewer walleyes on northern lakes this spring compared to last year's record take.

The bands speared about 22,500 walleyes as of yesterday. The amount is the lowest since 1992, said the DNR, which attributes the lower harvest to a quick spring thaw that resulted in fewer spawned walleye.

The Ojibwe bands have treaty-protected rights to spear the walleye, affirmed by federal courts.
