MAY 1, 2001

A federal judge in South Dakota on Monday said he will issue a temporary restraining order against the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Court, thereby preventing the tribe from halting development of a hog farm site.

The current tribal administration opposes a contract the previous administraiton signed with a South Dakota firm. Sun Prairie, an affiliate of Bell Farms, wants to build up to 288 hog barns on the reservation.

The tribe's protests are simultaneously in the tribal, federal, and appeals court systems.

So far, one hog farm site has been built. It has been in operation since 1999.
