MAY 24, 2000 The Gwich'in of Alaska are fighting proposed oil drilling on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's coastal plain. They say it threatens the caribou herd necessary for their subistence. Alaska Senator Frank Murkowski, chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, re-introduced legislation that would allow drilling in the area. A bill introduced last year narrowly passed in the Senate but failed in the House. The Inupiat have shown support for drilling. Get the Story:
