JUNE 14, 2000

President Clinton has honored the Native American Salmon Corps with the nation's highest honor for volunteerism, the President's Service Award.

The Native American Salmon Corps is a coalition of the Shoshone-Bannock and Nez Perce tribes of Idaho, the Yakama Indian Nation of Washington, and the Warm Springs and Umatilla tribes of Oregon, who work with the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission and several federal and local governments to provide young, at-risk Native Americans with scholarships and other opportunities to further their education. The students also work full-time on salmon recovery efforts in the Columbia Basin.

The Corps has helped more than 500 youths over the past six years.
