Supporters of a nuclear site opposed by the Prairie Island Mdewakanton Dakota Tribe say their chances of keeping it open are better now that George W. Bush is in the White House.

Two state legislators have introduced a bill to extend the life of the Prairie Island nuclear plant, which is located near the tribe's reservation. One of them, Rep. Loren Jennings, DFL-Harris, says he will meet with the tribal leaders to discuss their concerns.

President Bush has called for more nuclear power plants to address growing demand for electricity. He also said the nation needs a nuclear waste repository, a proposal Senate Democrats say is dead as long as they are in power.
